My 2004 VW Jetta has about 60,000 miles on the clock.

I would first ask them to prove that they do not owe you the service on the car (since it is not specifically stated on your warranty contract). If that doesn't work I would write to the attorney general's office in your state about it, and the better business bureau. If none of those things can solve the problem, I would sue in small claims for the money. But I am not a lawyer, those are just some options I could think of for you.

thanks for taking the time to reply - much appreciated. :)

I just got the call from the auto shop and the warranty company approved the repairs and are replacing all 4 shocks and paying for a rental car while it's done, so I needn't have worried. :)
