Affording to Stay at Home

Ever notice that those moms that SAH are usually (although not always) more well off than mothers who WOH? It seems to me, based on what I have seen, that while most women enjoy working their jobs and having a professional life outside of the home, some women prefer to stay home with their kids for a certain amount of time - whether it be 1 year or 10 years - and those women have the option to do so, while other women wouldn't even consider the option because they feel they can't afford it.

Well, it has been my experience that most women who do stay at home have

1) husbands who support the idea

2) Husbands who probably earn enough (or almost enough) to support the family.

3) Enough money to support themselves without working.

**Now I am not talking about people who get help from government agencies, I am speaking about women who do it with no outside help - just seems like most women can't because of financial reasons. So, is being a SAH mom now an "upper class" phenomenon - in general? Of course there are many SAH moms that are middle class, but if they chose to have paying jobs, they'd probably move right back up into that higher income bracket.

Yes, we CAN do. Just because we didn't make it this year because of other engagements we had, we still COULD have done if we were not busy.

Don't know how this turned into such a big thing-lol!!

Puerto Rico and Barbados are among my favorite islands (although Dominica edges them both out). I was pretty upset this fall when the hurricanes came through directly over Dominica, but fortunately, as it's one of the least developed islands in the southern Caribbean, it didn't suffer as much damage as some of the others.

I loved touring Barbados; we wanted to visit the Barbados Wildlife Preserve, but it was pouring down rain when we got there and since we really wanted to see the green monkeys and they would all be taking cover from the weather, there wasn't any point. A real shame, that. We did get to see St. George Parish Church, which is the oldest church on the island. Totally gorgeous!

I do wish we'd had more time in Puerto Rico, tho; we had enough time to tour the del Morro and San Cristobal forts and do a bit of shopping, but with only 4 hours in our port of call, it wasn't nearly long enough. If I had to do it again, I'd leave the ship at Puerto Rico and instead of taking the 2 days at sea to return home, I'd spend that time in Puerto Rico and then just fly home.

You know San Juan isn't an island, right? It's the name of the city; Puerto Rico is the island.

No, I consider a "vacation" either away from home for a few days or at least a week being at home doing things. My vacation days are used for days here and there, never for an entire week, unless I am going away.

I personally would not take the kids into the city alone.

We usually toss ideas about around the dinner table about where everyone wants to go or we look at what the kids are studying in school sometimes to glean ideas.

I don't remember Barbados much as I was only 3-lol!!
San Juan was nice but I don't think I would go back. We were only there for a day off the boat and we saw a fort, the court, one of the churches and took a tour with a taxi driver that took us everywhere for almost nothing. I like the history and seeing things but when I see it once, I am pretty much done and not interested in that again. I also was sick when we were there and was walking around in the 95 degree weather and it was not fun-lol!!
