Affording to Stay at Home

Ever notice that those moms that SAH are usually (although not always) more well off than mothers who WOH? It seems to me, based on what I have seen, that while most women enjoy working their jobs and having a professional life outside of the home, some women prefer to stay home with their kids for a certain amount of time - whether it be 1 year or 10 years - and those women have the option to do so, while other women wouldn't even consider the option because they feel they can't afford it.

Well, it has been my experience that most women who do stay at home have

1) husbands who support the idea

2) Husbands who probably earn enough (or almost enough) to support the family.

3) Enough money to support themselves without working.

**Now I am not talking about people who get help from government agencies, I am speaking about women who do it with no outside help - just seems like most women can't because of financial reasons. So, is being a SAH mom now an "upper class" phenomenon - in general? Of course there are many SAH moms that are middle class, but if they chose to have paying jobs, they'd probably move right back up into that higher income bracket.

Well, I'm a sucker for the old forts, etc., but it was clear that 4 hours in San Juan couldn't begin to scratch the surface of all Puerto Rico had to offer. Next time I go--and there WILL be a next time--I will definitely take you up on that offer! Seriously, I never had any idea how lovely Puerto Rico is.

Since I am a beach person, I would have liked to go to a beach as I have seen so many pictures of how beautiful they are. We did pass many of them but it was not up close. Our taxi driver was great and brought us all around but I know there is alot more to Puerto Rico.

Out of curiosity, how do you think your kids will turn out better because you SAH?

My case is a little different since I do work PT night shift on the weekends.

God we used to crack up at the huge cruise ships and all the people who rolled off them. They park on front st like a huge hotel. I used to have a view right out my office window of whatever ship was in town when I worked at the bank.

While I agree, I also think that women who opt to stay at home have the most difficult job in the world, are underappreciated, and need, more than any other women, support from other SAHMs who are in the same boat. There was a discussion at www.thewomensnest.com forum and they hit these key points. I tend to agree.

You know, I didn't even read the whole thread about these real estate hassles, her two houses, etc., because it didn't seem interesting to me.
