Affording to Stay at Home

Ever notice that those moms that SAH are usually (although not always) more well off than mothers who WOH? It seems to me, based on what I have seen, that while most women enjoy working their jobs and having a professional life outside of the home, some women prefer to stay home with their kids for a certain amount of time - whether it be 1 year or 10 years - and those women have the option to do so, while other women wouldn't even consider the option because they feel they can't afford it.

Well, it has been my experience that most women who do stay at home have

1) husbands who support the idea

2) Husbands who probably earn enough (or almost enough) to support the family.

3) Enough money to support themselves without working.

**Now I am not talking about people who get help from government agencies, I am speaking about women who do it with no outside help - just seems like most women can't because of financial reasons. So, is being a SAH mom now an "upper class" phenomenon - in general? Of course there are many SAH moms that are middle class, but if they chose to have paying jobs, they'd probably move right back up into that higher income bracket.

You may be right, but it's a little far from my OP, which was simply that when it comes to bringing up kids and looking towards their life chances, questions of apartments vs. single family houses, of what type of neighborhood to move into, do matter, even if some think that even to ask such questions means snobbery.

Since you didn't read all of the drama that lead up to the debate about appartments, it's understandable that your pov is what it is.

The long story short, gr8 is planning on defaulting on her home loan, as she assumes her home won't sell and that she will need to move out of state for work.

We are docking at St. George as I heard they are not docking at Hamilton anymore or at least our ship. We will not dock actually but will have to take a tender back and forth which I don't care.

When we went last time we rented a scooter and when we went to dinner, I would take the ferry from our hotel (The Palm Reef) to Hamilton and met my dh!

We would not be able to afford that on my nurses salary. So my kids are better off with me than in the care I could afford.

We'll be driving next time, airfare for 8 is just too much. We flew in June because I seriously could not imagine driving with kids 10,8,7,6,3 and almost 2! At least not MY kids, lol.

just a few choice thoughts:

<<I taught them how to read @ the age of 3. I took them to the Smithsonian, music class, gymnastics, ballet, we saw tons of children's theater. They were exposed to a lot of things. >>

Mine weren't reading by 3, but easily by 4 and 5.

Before I'd ever consider defaulting on my mortgage, I'd probably bite the bullet and move someplace roach-infested for as long as it takes to clear things up.

It'd likely be less than the effect on your kids of watching you cheat the bank, tho, right?
