Affording to Stay at Home

Ever notice that those moms that SAH are usually (although not always) more well off than mothers who WOH? It seems to me, based on what I have seen, that while most women enjoy working their jobs and having a professional life outside of the home, some women prefer to stay home with their kids for a certain amount of time - whether it be 1 year or 10 years - and those women have the option to do so, while other women wouldn't even consider the option because they feel they can't afford it.

Well, it has been my experience that most women who do stay at home have

1) husbands who support the idea

2) Husbands who probably earn enough (or almost enough) to support the family.

3) Enough money to support themselves without working.

**Now I am not talking about people who get help from government agencies, I am speaking about women who do it with no outside help - just seems like most women can't because of financial reasons. So, is being a SAH mom now an "upper class" phenomenon - in general? Of course there are many SAH moms that are middle class, but if they chose to have paying jobs, they'd probably move right back up into that higher income bracket.

Hello I usually dont like to disagree with others but I am 24 and a stay at home mom of two little boys. It is actually cheaper to stay home because here in CT daycare can run for about 300.00 a week wich would basically be a whole paycheck for me. I think A family should decide what is right for them. And why is this such a controversial topic anyways women have been stay at home moms for a very long time it doesnt seemlike its that big of a deal!

Sleeping time (whether it's the child or parent trying to sleep)

You *do* know, don't you, that babies, especially really young ones, sleep at daycare, too, don't you? And since that time doesn't count, they still spend the majority--the vast majority--of their time at home with Mom and/or Dad.

You militants keep forgetting that if sleep time doesn't count, it doesn't count for ANYONE. Not even the daycare provider. Or the selfless SAHM who, after all, cannot possibly be there 24/7. If sleep time doesn't count.

If sleeping time does not count for the WOHP then it also dos not count for the SAHP.

Nice way to change the subject. We were talking about being accepted to college, not paying for it. If Samantha were accepted to an Ivy, we'd find a way to pay for it. I believe most Ivies are willing to work with parents to make sure that if their kid is accepted there is a way to pay for it.

And again I have asked you to post any of these studies you keep talking about that show income levels have anything to do with it.

Since you havent I will take that as your answer.

Ty for posting those.

However they still do not say that SES are one of the most important factors in regarding how a child will turn out, if they will go to college and all that.
