Affording to Stay at Home

Ever notice that those moms that SAH are usually (although not always) more well off than mothers who WOH? It seems to me, based on what I have seen, that while most women enjoy working their jobs and having a professional life outside of the home, some women prefer to stay home with their kids for a certain amount of time - whether it be 1 year or 10 years - and those women have the option to do so, while other women wouldn't even consider the option because they feel they can't afford it.

Well, it has been my experience that most women who do stay at home have

1) husbands who support the idea

2) Husbands who probably earn enough (or almost enough) to support the family.

3) Enough money to support themselves without working.

**Now I am not talking about people who get help from government agencies, I am speaking about women who do it with no outside help - just seems like most women can't because of financial reasons. So, is being a SAH mom now an "upper class" phenomenon - in general? Of course there are many SAH moms that are middle class, but if they chose to have paying jobs, they'd probably move right back up into that higher income bracket.

I find nothing snobbish about those who aspire to professional careers. I find something very snobbish about those who aspire to live near rocket scientists, not that there's anything wrong with auto mechanics, but clearly they wouldn't want to live near any.....

ITA that her move probably would be temporary as she is going to another state and trying to sell her old home to buy a new one.

Why do you have a problem with me asking you about your move as you have told me over and over before that you did that as a temporary thing but you seemed to have stayed for awhile.

Don't know her circumstances but maybe the only apt's available are not what she desires, don't know?

No, there are only certain homes. My gf is going through this now and she is having a hard time because most of the homes are in the bad towns in our area.

Why would you think only "I" think these areas are bad towns?

What do ducky's decisions have to do with CLW's? Why do you keep asking ducky how long she's lived in an apartment? She's not saying EVERYONE lives in apartments temporarily; she's saying that if CLW doesn't want to live in an apartment longer than it takes to sell her house, she doesn't HAVE to. And given that CLW has also said she owes very little on the house and therefore is able to sell at below market value and still pay off the note, making the house incredibly marketable, unless the place smells like a cat box, she should not have a problem selling it within 6 to 9 months. Of course, that would require that she actually put it on the market.

What I have a problem with is the fact that you won't drop it.

I myself have lived in 2 apt's after I got married but they were in people's homes. I do know people who have lived and do live in apt's. I find nothing wrong with it but most people do not stay there a long time as it is usually too small for a family.

Maybe I am the first you have met who does not go into the city. My parents never took us and I have only gone a few times with my dh and friends. While it is not too far to go, I don't have the need to be there as I can get whatever I need right here on the island. Once my kids get a little older, I would like to take them in to see certain things but it is hard with smaller children and a long day for them.

Believe it or not, I have been to Hawaii but have never been to the Statue of Liberty!

Sorry, didn't know only certain people were allowed to have questions asked over and over to them but not others.
