Hilary Rosen has started a Twitter firestorm by stating that Ann Romney isn't capable of giving advice on women and the economy since she's never worked a day in her life:

I'm believing she has never worked for several reasons (not that they are rich).

Ann Romney doesn't try to represent working mothers, What she has presented however is that women care about the economy (regardless of working status) and that's what Rosen wrongly tore down...

I think the words people use are often meaningful. However, I'd never heard of Rosen before this, so I would give her the benefit of the doubt in assuming she didn't mean it that way. As you say, she followed up with a clarification and has apologized. I don't think that means she was "right," though, just that she misspoke, which happens. I think she's "right" that the Romneys are out of touch.

Rosen is right, Ann Romney hasn't worked a day in her life, in the context that Rosen was speaking.

It doesn't, but even that doesn't *limit* the meaning to earning one's livelihood. And your other definitions #1, 2, or 3 below come from dictionary.com and don't say anything about "earning one's livelihood." Any of them could apply to her charitable work or to taking care of her kids, and none of them mention pay. I've seen this debate many times over the years on these boards, and I agree with those who say that charitable work (and sah) are *work*; they're just not a job. What Rosen should have said is that Romney "has never had a job in her life" or that she's "never worked for pay."

You believe that being a mother and volunteer work, isn't a job?

But "for pay" is part of the context of Rosen's comments and to continue to deliberately take a phrase out of context is insulting.

A woman who has never "worked for pay" in her life can't fully understand, because she's never experienced, the economic issues that arise in the jobforce. This applies to both SAHMs that are wealthy and those that are not. She can, however, be supportive of "working women".

A wealthy woman, WOH or SAH, can't fully understand, because she's never experienced, the real-life implications of a crappy economy. She can't understand choosing between food on the table or the water bill. She can't understand what not having access to medical care or childcare can do to a family barely above the poverty level.

Romney is a case where she has never worked for pay and has always been wealthy, so the idea of her "representing" working women in today's economy is a farce.

Exactly, taken out of context.

I agree that her comments were valid. She doesn't owe anyone; it is about choices, etc.

But she was defending/rebutting something that wasn't ever said. I can spout "The sky is blue" all day long; but it's meaningless if no one said the sky was pink.

Nothing. But that wasn't what I said nor was it my point.
