What are some reasons that families try to avoid childcare?

I'm afraid of not being there if something happens to him.

Huh? How many parents do you actually know who *don't* consider themselves to be raising their own children?

psst...I think that was intended as a tongue-in-cheek statement, hence the asterisks on *raising*.....

well as someone who USED child care I'd say my standards were somewhere between Her Highness's royal Nursery and leaving her with a pack of dingos....

I know that realy has nothing to do with your post I've just been dying for years to get some kind of "dingos ate my baby' reference onto this board.

lousy housekeeping that leaves cat hair all over the place.

Hey, don't beat yourself up. It's the cat leaving cat hair all over the place. ;)

You're doing your best, right? What more could anyone ask of you? Now go write your dh a note in the cat hair, asking him to give the place a quick vacuum and go enjoy your baby :)

For me, it's primarily a matter of cost. DH and I have roughly the same income potential working full time, but as a math guy, he has a much higher "part-time-job" income potential than I do. He can tutor and teach in the evenings and on weekends and make as much as he would make working full time after day care expenses. And it seems silly to me to pay for something we can do ourselves. If we went with a cheap provider, this wouldn't be the case, but I wouldn't be comfortable with anything but extremely high quality other care. Plus, we live near family, so if we have a conflict one of the grandmas is more than happy to babysit.
