Yes, it is standard procedure to separate twins now. The rationale is that they tend to be lumped together even if people don't mean to do so. Separating is to support individual development. This is also why parents are advised NOT to dress them alike etc.
My dad and uncle are twins and back then nobody thought of separating them and their mother delighted in dressing them alike. They have never really separated. It is quite odd.
