At lunch, I was walking at a park near my office.

Nope, thankfully.

Pica and a kid eating dirt once or twice are two very different things.

Some of my best times was when we had the au pair. We could all go to the park, I could bring a book and Marcel would play with all the kids there. All the other park parents there loved him too. He had the patience of a saint (unlike moi) and he had a knack of communicating with all kids 2 through 10 (also unlike me). Good times.

What does it have to do with toddler exploration?

well, I'll just have to supercede your observations with my own ACTUAL experiences with having nannies. While we had a few instances of nannies not doing their job -- in fact most of the job that they did the least of was the light housekeeping -- NOT slacking on the childcare.

Several were outstanding. Most were very good. One stayed 4 years, one stayed 5 years and our current one has been with us a year. None of them would have stayed if they weren't doing a good job.

You know, I heard a story on pica on npr just recently while running. Did you listen to it too? They didn't mention toddlers though.

I can remember one especially contentious weekend way back in the dark ages (when John...and probably some of the Moms currently on this board! LOL... was 3 or 4). The weather was horrible so not much to do outside and he'd just been fractious all day and my nerves were on edge, too, so we'd been in conflict the entire day. Or maybe it seemed that way, but finally after a what seemed like the last in an endless number of tantrums and blowouts, we were both in recovery mode on the sofa, sullenly sitting next to each other and mindlessly looking at, without really seeing, whatever was on TV.

John gave out this huge sigh, leaned against me and said, "I wish I were at daycare today."

LOL, I just hugged him a bit closer and said, "I wish you were, too."
