I've never understood why people want to put *respect* and *fear* togeether as if the two are synonymous. Being afraid of your parents is absolutely not the same as respecting them.
So because my dd is a cheerleader, and gets her nails done while I get a pedicure, likes to shop with me that means she is being treated like an adult?
OK, around here they are not typical girly things. My 14yo has never had a manicure and I have never had a pedicure either. Some of the girls wear make-up, even dd, but it is usually just eyeliner. There are a few girls in dd's school who are all dolled up, but those girls are generally looked down upon by the rest. The school is a junior high, so the kids are 12-14. I have never heard of cheerleading aorund here. I guess it exists for professional teams, maybe, but it is not a kid activity.
i feared my parents, followed their rules hence respected their rules......kids my age who lied to their parents or their whereabouts, maybe not so much.
I do not like nail polish and do not want to teach my dd that it is a nice thing. I do not forbid it, but I will not promote it either.
As far as cheerleading, I find it extremely distasteful. Chalk it up to my being a horrid "furriner." I sometimes joke that I moved abroad so that I would not have to deal with the possibility of dd perhaps wanting to cheerlead. That is not the reason we moved, but, for me, it is a pleasant fringe benefit.
However, I am absolutely sure that plenty of fine, outstanding women did cheerleading at some point in their lives. My real point was that if something is truly distasteful or upsetting to me, I will happily move somewhere else where I won't have to worry about it for my child. When you have kids, I think it is important that you are at ease with the environment, school and people your kid will grow up in and around.
