I don't remember it that way at all.

What could possibly be the point of spanking a 10, 12 or 14 year old?

I dont disagree with you. Although I know that in the inner circle of *neighborhood friends* we grew up with there are no sexual predetors.

You don't know that at all. The only reason you know about predators in your neighborhood today is because you can look it up on the internet. Would you have any way of knowing if it weren't for your access to those records? And how do you know that some of them weren't molesting kids (perhaps their own) but they simply weren't ever turned in. The idea that you can report your own Dad or uncle to the police is an EXTREMELY recent one.

Very true, although my children are allowed on line, only on certain sites. Iam not really worried about sexual predators online when it comes to my kids they are not allowed online freedom. However sexual predators are becomming a major problem today in our society.

Are you suggesting all children of all ages should not be allowed on line? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Yes definately in that respect I agree that parents today are obliged to make sure that they are up on every facet of their kid's education. What I meant by more responsibility is more in terms of volume and stakes. Today a kid's future hangs in the balance far more precariously if they don't do well. Back then if you didn't do well...oh well. It wasn't so literally the end of the world. Your parents would be mad, possibly ground you till you got better grades (or not) but you could still get a highschool diploma if you muddled through more or less since there was no MCAS graduation requirement. And if you weren't all that good academically then there was still a fairly large number of jobs that didn't require degrees and weren't outsourced. You can still get a decent job w/o a college degree today (as I have argued in other threads) but even so there are still more hoops to be jumped through. The old manufacturing jobs that required neither a college degree nor an apprenticeship are mostly done elsewhere now.

I just don't see why you'd bring up online access if it's not a problem for you.

It's true, the stakes are higher, but that's an adult perspective and not one that can motivate young kids.
