Yes, I do know that there are no sexual abusers or molesters in our inner circle of friends while growing up. There are a few gay's who came out of the closet but that was for the best. A couple alchoholics but no nobody sexually molested or abused a child. :)

You can argue that I do not know that to be fact, but within this tight group who are now elderly with grown children and still all very close, they are no sexual child abusers.

I do know of others in my home town who are.

I also know of a family of 5 girls who had a dad who sexually molested everyone of them, but nothing was ever said or done about it. Very sad, it was shushed.

Im glad things have changed.

I was asked how things have changed since 1970's and one obvious answer is internet predators. That is why i brought it up.

I agree with you that it is not a wise choice to not allow your children out of your sight, to not give them some sense of independence until they can drive.

When he is old enough to be left alone, I will deal with that then.

The reason you were asked how things have changed was that you claimed kids aren't old enough at 12 to babysit, despite several posters reporting they did indeed babysit at that age, myself included, BTW.

How can you know there was not one in 1970? The most you can now is one was convicted of it. You have no idea what went on behind closed doors.

I don't know what MCAS is, but if you lived in New York State- they had a staewide H.S test requirement as far back as the 70's.

I agree that the manfacturing jobs have all but disappeared.

I don't notice an increase or decreae in the amount of homework my children get compared to the homework I had as a child. However, I do notice that my now 4th grade has never written a report and we did that starting in the third grade. Math is a little more advanced- but not a huge leap.
What I do see as an increase is the increase in organized sports. There is so much more variety - no longer just soccer and football in the fall, basketball/swimming in the winter and baseball/softball in the spring. We also have lacrosse, Tai Kwon Do, Karate, Fencing, tennis....... Plus there are house leagues and travel leagues and it is all starting earlier and earlier....

They aren't taught simple living skills either. A decade ago I had a friend still at college (working on a graduate degree) who worked in the book store. She had freshman coming in to pay for books using their savings book and not knowing how to write a simple check.

I had forgotten about polio. I remember going to the local elementary school at night and given surgar cubes by a nurse when I was 5. The whole school was lined up by families. And I went to high school with a girl who had braces on her legs due to polio.

"Yes, I do know that there are no sexual abusers or molesters in our inner circle of friends while growing up."

I wish I could say the same. I thought I could until ten years AFTER H.S. school graduation it was revealed that a very close friend of my sister and I's father raped her in H.S. We had no idea. She had a sister my age and she was my sister's age. If you had asked me to pick the father who was most like mine among my friends, I would have picked him. It shook my family to the core. Is he now on a list of registered sex offenders, yes- but the damage is done. Is he a "typical" sex offender? No- it happened once.- and only to one of his three girls. You never really know what happens in the houses of friends- even close ones.
