I hope you are right about your circle of childhood friends, I really do. Things have changed some as far as sexual abuse is concerned, mostly for the better.

My DH was in a coma for 10 days when he was hit and nearly killed on a bike. It was the driver's fault, DH was on the shoulder of the road and the driver looked down and ended up hitting him at 60 miles an hour. He was 13. One leg is now shorter than the other and he is completely deaf in one ear--and he thinks he got off lucky.

Helmets are not negotiable in our family and our son, knowing what happened to his father, doesn't bat an eyelash. I cringe when I see kids on bikes w/o helmets. I didn't wear one when I was a kid, but I didn't wear a seatbelt either. I wouldn't dream of letting DS bounce around the car unrestrained just b/c I did it 30 years ago and lived to tell about it.

"Well I did it and I survived" really isn't what I want for my kid. Because lots of other kids did it and DIDN'T survive. Or were permanently disabled in some way.

I am a tiny bit younger than you I think, but in any event the great fear for us was tuberculosis. Every year the tuberculosis truck pulled into the school yard and all the teachers and administrators were x-rayed to make sure that they did not carry the disease. In the 5th grade, we were all vaccinated. The vaccine was quite nasty (I developed an infected sore that took 6ms to heal).

I see what your saying, I was asked in other places here how the world has change.

You do not see a change in our society since you were 12? I do.

I had the occasional babysitting job when I was ten. And I believe that's how old my sister and I were when we were allowed to stay home for short periods of time by ourselves...

I don't know much about school cheerleading, but maybe you can tell me why the boys are all covered up and the girls are in short skirts or leotards?

I know you do, thanks :^) I agree things have changed mostly for the better as far as catching and convicting sexual abusers and molestors. It seem's like they are comming out the wood work though . That is all the news is full of anymore. "The Mayor of ____ city was caught abusing a 12 year old boy"

Mr. ____ who teaches 12th grade at ____ high school was convited for sexually abusing a 16 year old girl.

Pator____ was caught molesting a 7 year old boy in his office.

You get the picture it makes me sick!

Now internet predators is going bonkers.

I wonder what will be next.
