Same here. I dont recall ever fearing my mom. I do, however, recall having enough respect for her that it was important to me that I not disappoint her.
In 1970 you wouldnt have known if there was a pedophile. There were no laws then that allowed communities access to criminal records like there are today.
And like several people have posted, sexual abuse went largely undetected then. Your next door neighbor could have been a pedophile, or your friend's fathers or your brother's (if you have one) little league coach. And you wouldnt have known. Even in today's day and age when we do know so much more, we still know very little.
As long as someone who enjoy's children sexually can manage to keep from acting on it, not get caught with internet porn or can scare children into not reporting him...it still goes on quite a bit.
Statistically your 10 year old is safer home alone because then all of the people most likely to molest him/her arent there. (Family, close friends)
You cant possibly know this. Your best friend as a child could have been molested every day by an uncle or her father or a neighbor and you never would have known. People didnt talk about it then.
My mother was fondled by her stepfather several times when she was 12. Luckily her mother believed her and left him. Her own sister who was 11 at the time didnt know about it until they were adults. It was hushed up and not spoken of.
IME, the opposite is true. My mom always said she would rather know what we were doing and disapprove than be lied to. Therefore, we were always pretty honest w/her about what we were doing. My friends w/parents who weren't quite as liberal as my mom were the ones who lied to their parents constantly, snuck out of the house, etc. My mom knew I was drinking underage, she didn't like it and made her feelings clear, but I knew that if I needed a ride home, I could always call her. Consequently, fear of getting "in trouble" never led me to drunk driving or getting into an unsafe situation. It wasn't an issue for me. Likewise, my mom knew I was having sex w/my now-husband, and while she wasn't thrilled w/the whole premarital sex thing, she knew we were using protection and being responsible.
She didn't always approve, but I was allowed to make my own decisions and my own mistakes. I never got into trouble and was a good kid--which I fully credit my parents for.

It was a school in the city.
