i think that's all easier to say as an adult than it is for a child to comprehend. my parents' attitude was not related to a holy hell, but rahter an innate feeling of what they knew was right and wrong. and that rubbed off on me..........all i'm saying tonight is that feeling was more of a fear of not doing something i knew was wrong for the reasons my parents believed, than for reasons i wanted to share in front of a group of kids who were (i.e. ready to light up). i mean, you don't decline a cigarette in a room full of people lighting up by saying it hurts your lungs,do you? if you're going to decline it,you try to remain courteous about it and leave it at a no,thank you.

kids are cruel. no two ways about it.....the ones who lied to their parents, the ones who feared less, the ones who ended up getting grounded more because of their actions, were the ones who respected less, too.

Pretty much. But they weren't necessarily the ones that feared less.

You dont give kids, especially teens, much credit. I dont need my kids to fear me in order to understand right from wrong. Do you really think its that hard for kids to understand?

I never smoked and never had a problem saying *No thanks, thats disgusting* when offered a smoke from people in hs.

And I'm lost on what you are saying on your last paragraph. What does kids being cruel have to do with lying and being grounded, etc?

No I'm not confusing it. That was just one example she used. I dont think that fear and respect are parallel, nor does there need to be fear in order for there to be respect.

my dd's cheer team cheered in track suits for at least half of their games this year. their skirts are substantially longer than the skirts girls wear to school every day.

no, you are not doing what is right - you are doing what you want to do, because you think it is best - that doesnt make it right. i have an 8 year old and i wouldnt have an issue with her staying at home for a few minutes alone, she doesnt because she is not comfortable with it, but i am sure by the time she is 10 she will be staying home alone on occassion if i have a quick errand to run.

and if you were in the house dealing with a sick child and they refused to let your kids off the bus and you then had to take that sick child out to pick up the others how happy would you be then. i would be irate. of course none of our kids have more than 3-4 house walk from the bus stop - perhaps your bus stops are more widely spaced. i can imagine putting that much responsibility on the bus drivers - how do they know how old each child is, how do they know who is or is not supposed to meet a child at the bus stop
