I'm not sure I see much of a difference between shorts and a skirt with/blummers underneath, except of course the fact that shorts won't twirl in the routine.

At the HS level, I'm sure cheerleading squads are all over the map wrt the hotness factor.

I think its just a matter of separating the two and still appreciating them both. Little House was good in book and show. The same with Anne of Green Gables.

My dd13 has only seen one or two of the leading women soccer players IRL, but their posters are all over her bedroom walls; I'd say she sees them as role models, even though she'll probably never play soccer professionally.
