Another successful wohm that says you can't have it all.  I actually think what she says can be applied across the board too, WOHM and SAHM alike.

It depends on how "all" is defined by the individual.  I don't judge my decisions based on the comments or reflections of others, I'm an individual.

How do you define "having it all"?

"I don't think women can have it all," said Nooyi. "We pretend we can have it all...You know, you have to cope. Because you die with guilt. You just die with guilt."

Over her thirty-minute interview, Nooyi shared personal stories about missing her daughters' school events for work, trying to balance her role as mother, wife, and daughter, all while running a Fortune 500 company.

Above are bits of what the ceo says about having it all.

I don't believe having it all exists so I won't weigh in with a "definition"..  I do believe it's a burden only some women place on themselves however and I wonder why that is, What is all?   Are you missing something if you don't have everything?  Do men have it all?  I'd also be curious what Nooyi meant by "cope" too b/c to me, that is applicable to challenge and adveristy, Perhaps the challenge is the pressure from others that she must have it all...

Well, it it doesn't exist, no one can have it.  Problem solved.

Well, it goes without saying, right?  I mean, I don't have every kind of housing.  I have one kind of house.  I don't have every car; I have one.  I don't have every article of clothing ever made.

Did i make it to every one of my kid's school functions?  Nope.  I made  it to most of the ones he felt were most important (and the ex overlapped enough to get the others.  I don't have everythign I want; I have everything I *need* and a lot of what I want.  So what if I don't have it all.  I don't WANT it all.  never did.  Who would?

" "We pretend we can have it all...You know, you have to cope. Because you die with guilt. You just die with guilt.""

Yes, I saw that quote, but she talks about guilt, so I imagine she is talking about not doing enough for her kids somehow. I find guilt a very destructive feeling in connection with kids. If you can't stand behind what you are doing, then change something to make it possible for you to stand behind it.

However, the CEO gives the example of not being able to go to coffee klatsches at her kid's school, and her kid then chastises her for not being there and gives a list of all the moms who were there. CEO feels terrible, then calls the school and gets a list of all the other moms who were not there. Next time her dd guilts her, she recites the list of all the other moms who weren't there. That, IMO, is the correct way to deal with the guilt, because guilt like that is only destructive. Then I think of the old tradition in Britain of sending kids off to boarding school at age 7. Most of those mothers didn't even work.

I'd be pissed if my kid gave me guilt over not being at a coffee Klatch. I mean really, what's that got to do with my kid? I raised my kids better than for them to give me a hard time about crap like that. Missing my kids performance as Juliet? Yeah, I'd feel regret and *maybe* guilt! but still not my kid's place to truth make me feel guilty.
