the census bureau, and salary.com.

i found this in the local paper today, and granted, its in the dear abbey section, i found the information she gave was very interesting and pertained to a lot of questions in another thread.

"According to the Census Bureau figures for 2004 — which are the most recent — there are 36.7 million mothers of minor children in the United States. About one-third of them, 10.8 million, are stay-at-home moms.

According to an article penned by Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today, in its May 11, 2006, edition, “Salary.com compensation experts estimate that stay-at-home moms work an average of 91.6 hours a week.” That's more than double the number of hours the average office worker puts in. He went on to say, “That should be worth $134,121 annually.”

He quoted the compensation analysts as figuring the lowest-paying parts of a mother's job are “housekeeper, laundry machine operator and janitor. Higher-paying categories include computer operator, facilities manager, psychologist and CEO.” With a 91.6-hour work week, 52 weeks a year, it works out to be $28.16 an hour."

Assuming you mean those of us who work, we also contribute. SAHM don't, yet still are entitled to benefits. I have no idea why.

Well, not the ones who go to my daycare. I am very good friends still with people from 7 years ago and we were all in the same situation. Only 1 really didn't "need" to work. After her 2nd she quit for awhile until he went into preschool and she went into real estate.
The misconception is that all dual wohp's make much more than 1 income and that is just not true. If my dh or myself make what one of us did, one of us could then stay home.

Because it's nonsense?

Any banker in NYC isn't driving his or her clients anyway. Just doesn't happen.

As for outside of NYC, I'd feel far more secure with a banker who understood the value of a buck and didn't feel a need for conspicuous consumption.

My dh didn't drive clients around while in NY...but he did attend many functions and parties where clients and others did see his car.
The fact is you are judged by what you wear, what you drive , where you live.

Just curious what do you do? Don't you have to dress a certain way for your profession?

"As for outside of NYC, I'd feel far more secure with a banker who understood the value of a buck and didn't feel a need for conspicuous consumption".....

Maybe you would want a financial planner that understood the value of a dollar.....but if you had all your life's work riding on one deal....I think you'd be a little more selective....

If I need a high powered lawyer I'd go with one that "looked the part".

An insurance/investement guy from a bank came to see dh and I earlier in the summer. I remember seeing him drive up to the building in his fancy suv and rolling my eyes. I'm sure he's trying to impress people, but it just looks like he needlessly throws his money around on fancy cars rather than being economical and making wiser financial decisions. lol. We did not choose to invest through his company.

No one here ever said that was the case. Just because I am able to SAH doesn't mean my DH makes more than two WOHP families.

***If both families make the same amount of money and have the same similar bills, then the one without the daycare expense has more money at the end of the week than the other.***

I understand that as it is simple math. However both families don't always make the same amount.

***My dh and I probably make LESS than some of the 1 income families I know. We are not rolling in the money because there are 2 of us working. We both make the same and it equals to the average salary in my town (that of either 1 or 2 incomes coming in).***

When did anyone say that you were rolling in the dough? According to some people here you are well off. You have a car and are able to pay for it, so you are well off...didn't ya know? ;O) I understand totally what you are saying. However don't think just because some families are able to have a SAHP that they are rolling in the dough.

Your work status is irrelevent to this issue. Your are entitled to 1/2 your DH SS whether you work or not.

You have no idea why? What about the SAHM that returns to work and makes more money than a WOHM that never stayed at home? Are the WOHM not entitled to their SS because they didn't contribute as much? Sort of an odd thing to say...you have no idea why?

Well I think you have implied one than once that SAHP have more money than WOHP...that isn't always the case either. Do I know SAHM that their DH make a lot of money...yes I do. They are able to do whatever they want and live in beautiful homes, drive nice cars, and vacation all the time. Do I know dual WOHP that are in the same situation? Yes I do. I also know that there are dual woh families, and sah families that just scrape by. I think you are under the misconception that SAH are able to SAH because their DH make big money.

again, you're talking financial planner, Who you would hope had similar ideas about investing and saving for the future.

I'm talking about high powered executives or high powered lawyers wouldn't you want one that looked the part? I know if I was on trial for murder I'd want a high paid slick looking lawyer....not some country bumpkin.....(unless of course I was being tried in some back woods part of the us)
