I think that unless any of us has worked any of those jobs we can't comment. I ALSO think that life isn't a competition -- it's not a "I work harder than you race"

I think I have it all too -- a job in theater which is the greatest bestest place in the world as far as I'm concerned -- a home I own, a woman who loves me and wants to marry me, and a child who in all her mercurial dramatic glory makes my life completely utterly hysterical.

different strokes, i guess.

Not commuting.

Being able to work fewer hours in a particular week and being able to shift my work hours to some degree.

Needing fewer hours of childcare.

Not having to buy a work wardrobe.

And you're a middle school teacher, too.

I actually think we would have less turnover in a lot of the"helping" professions if those people did have sabbaticals and regular time off like teachers do. Helping others, whether through teaching or providing healthcare or being a social worker or a police officer or whatever is wonderful, but it can also suck the life and joy right out of you after awhile. I have a lot of respect for teachers, but I don't think their job is any more onerous than say, a social worker who manages a caseload full of abused children in at-risk situations. And if that person had one year out of seven "off," or at least in a reassigned, less stressful position, we'd probably have more social workers lasting longer than the average.

Shrug. I've done lots of things in my life, but my family means the most to me. I hope my kids remember me as someone who stopped to smell the roses rather than someone who rushed through life trying to get credit on her tombstone for a bunch of accomplishments.

I find it ironic that you're spouting all this talk about doing something meaningful. Here you are, finally in a job when you could actually do something meaningful to help people, and all you've done all year is complain about how unappreciated and underpaid you are. You'll be out of there as soon as you can find a better-paying job.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are saying here correctly....perhaps I have it out of context but, are you saying that parenting is above everything and to do something outside of parenting, it has to be more important than parenting?

I think many (you?) seem to ignore the fact that some families simply want two full time workers, it's not just about income.
