Both of those things you mentioned, severance packages and unemployment are not given/used by all employees.
Since it is rare that an SAHM is out of the work force their entire adult life it is possible for them to be a SAHM and still get a severance check or unemployment at some point in their life.
So neither one is only used by those currently employed or necessarily ever used by those employed.
OK, maybe it's because I'm just waking up and not feeling well, but I've been over Whoville's post twice, and gone back a few posts to make sure I didn't miss something, and I saw no mention of severance packages or unemployment anywhere.
But the pay off is greater in the end.
Actually, there is a glut of science teachers so the number of kids being born isn't helping anyone of us keep our jobs.
