No one "needs" to eat at the same time everyday but our schedules permit us to eat as a family most of the time, around the same time every night, at this time of our lives. When I was a kid we ate at the same time for years. It never seemed to be a problem for my family and we just knew what time to be home as that was the time for dinner.

ONCE AGAIN, I'm sure that our kids' schools' schedules of things (night time events) accomodates MANY of the parents -- just not us.

The performances, games, auditoriums, teacher nights appear to be Filled -- so the schools seem to have accomodated MANY/MOST of the parents.

We make it work when we need to. It's just not a big deal here.

I am sure some people do have to make changes to their schedule like I do when I attend things during the day at school.

I guess they decided that after 7pm would be a good time to have concerts and ceremonies because many people WOULD be able to make it at that time. They could have also considered the train schedules as parents could still make the 7/7:30pm start time.

Good point; if you didn't use it on the older kids, they're less likely to play along for the younger one :) Oh, well :)
