<<I never said they were too YOUNG to eat outside the home. Just that they are young enough that many opportunities have not arisen yet. >>

Then why the comment that they were still young if that wasn't a reason?

<<And we are very social also and my children are still young. Most of the time they are with us and friends playdates are a few hours and don't go into dinnertime. >>

So are they too young or not?

This is sick, childish and also completely irrelevant.

IME, that difference is a socio-economic one. In lower income areas or among people who grew up poor, people are careful about not burdening others with feeding their kids and also concerned about coming across as if they can afford to feed their own kids. I remember once having some kids in my house who would not eat anything the whole time they were there. When I mentioned it to the mom at pick-up, she told me that they were taught not to eat when out.

Here they did start around age 5. Since the main meal here is the hot lunch after school, any play dates, beginning in K, meant a shared meal as well. Sleepovers also involved a meal (or 2 or 3). That was at the private school. At the public where dd is now I have noticed that the kids go out of their way to eat at home before seeing each other, which is an SES thing.
