You seem to be missing a piece to the puzzle, it's not all determined how much a house is worth, there is the comparison to investment accounts.

I love my oldest having a cell phone, a pretty basic model (at least according to him, lol)...it's very handy for rides, finding him at school without me having to search all over campus, meeting him somewhere and just a piece of mind when he's away from me.

I don't think there is an assumption...you clearly stated that iye the house was the biggest asset, if one isn't planning on using the house as part of their assets, then what would be the point of it being the largest asset....shouldn't the investment accounts be the largest asset if that is what one is going to retire on?
