"AND THEN YOU NEVER KNOW...I found out some stuff this weekend about a family whom I have known since ODS started kindergarten. :-("

EXACTLY. And if you are not there to see them drive your child, you don't know either.

Well they'd have to respond by e-mail when they make it clear they aren't staying at school even a minute after dismissal!

I just appreciate more the teachers at my children's school.

Nice try but if you are going to quote me, quote me accurately.

I'm talking about establishing normal, reasonable boundaries, not refusing to do one's job. Teachers are teachers, not slaves to be called upon at any time of any day for any reason. I am highly accessible to my students. They have my cell phone number (most instructors I know would never give that out), but with the boundary that they may only call between 8am and 9pm. Or do you think that since my students are my "customers", they should be able to call me at midnight to ask me a question about the difference between proactive and retroactive memory interference?

Nope, just understanding what's been written here.

But if you have firsthand experience being one of those disgruntled parents, by all means share.

Heck, anyone who sees me drop my kids off at school in the morning probably thinks I look wasted because I'm so tired. :-D

I think though the point is that a smaller school community generally means that parents are more likely to know each other... and private schools are generally smaller than public schools. More chances to get to know each other over time, and esp. if like PKA you socialize with them as well. You get to know generally how people comport themselves.

And even then, I think how well you know people depends on personalities/group dynamics/etc... our elementary school is quite small, but I have had very different experiences with my two kids' cohorts. The parents in ODS class/grade were a very cohesive group, and we remain so. YDS grade/class, not so much.

EXACTLY. Every job I know of has on-duty and off-duty hours. I don't know why teachers are expected to gleefully be the exception every day of their lives.
