I need to communicate with my children's teacher's on a regular basis. They are a partner in my children's education.

< a parent might want to contact her is best reached IME in person or by phone.>

Why is email not as valid phone or in person? What's the downside to email communication for people who communicate well that way? I actually have a phobia against telephones - I hate them, I'll use them when I have to, but they are not my preferred method of communication.

Do you really have your teachers home phone numbers? If I have a concerns in the evening, I will compose an email and usually receive a response that same evening. I do have my ODS teacher on my IM list because she loves him and she knows he needs a kick in the pants sometimes to do his work. She gives me a heads up on some of his assignments. She instigates the chat, not me. She's also now a good friend, so not every IM chat has to do with the kids.

Many teachers love new media options to reach out to parents, but they will follow the leave of a concerned parent, IME. All parents have access to a high level of information about what goes on at school via the web, not just the ones who volunteer in the classroom.

Yes, there are any number of possibilities...I wonder of those who have a problem with parents driving on field trips also don't allow their children to ride in other people's cars at other times?

I switch my work around in the summer as well....that's one of the benefits of having a flexible job.

I'm coming in late here, but it seems to me common sense that some messages are best delivered by e-mail, and that some require in-person or phone contact. For instance, my kids' teachers can send out a mass e-mail saying "if you haven't turned in your permission slip for X yet, please do so by Friday in order to guarantee a slot on the bus." Or, "We still need a silver teapot for the prop in the spring play, does anyone have one to lend?" Whereas, "we need to talk about your kids' progress (or lack thereof) in my class" would really be a phone/in person kind of conversation.

Perhaps the school is an example of a school that is not current in their technology?

While I suppose I report to my chief of service, I still don't have to call anyone to tell them that I am coming in late or leaving early.

You can't honestly be debating that a teacher would prefer 20 phone calls
