you guys would have loved my mother -- anyone who didn't turn in an assignment on time failed it. period. no second chances...

she also used to stand at the doorway of the school and remove ball caps from the heads of teenage boys.

I agree, I think I would have loved your mom. She sounds like my 5th grade teacher - she didn't take any bull from anyone and she had the most delightfully dark sense of humor. Great lady.

That is one thing I love about my kids' school. It is school policy not to accept late work except for illness or a family emergency. And if you are sick two days, you have two days to make up work you missed. They also do not allow teachers to offer "extra credit" for anyone. And there are no Ds -- if you don't know 70% of the material, you don't pass the course. These are good life lessons, particularly for my older one with ADHD who struggles with organization. He needs to learn about deadlines and penalties and "real world" kinds of scenarios.

What do you mean? You think the kids have stress because they are held to standards and rules?

It's been interesting, about how my kids' needs have changed over the years.

My dd had a rough start to public school.

That was the policy in my elementary/middle school growing up. 70% was considered the lower cutoff for a D, and late work only accepted for medical reasons. It served me quite well when I went to high school with the idea that a 92% was a B and an 85% was a C. I kept being pleasantly surprised at my grades, LOL.
