Beats me, we did the same thing and it's not costing us any more but it's hopefully saving ds2 a lot of pain.

Mine have split the glasses and braces need.
However, I have one boy who is a dentist's dream patient and one who is a dentist's nightmare patient. The one who is a nightmare had to go under to get his filling and teeth extracted last year.
Guess which one has perfect teeth and which one will need braces?
ITA.
i never got the round 1 and round 2 intervention some orthodontists insist on nowadays.
Maybe if you had a kid with a potential maxillo-facial issue, you'd have done your research and you would understand why the two phase approach is sometimes better. You know, a kid whose top teeth don't line up with the bottom teeth? Maybe it would be better if he could chew his food all the way through childhood instead of waiting until he was, oh, I don't know, sixteen or so? Or whatever age it is that you deem appropriate to address the issue.
I don't know what kind of problem your child has that the orthodontist you consulted wants to treat. Evidently it is a mild problem that doesn't involve breaking the jaw or stretching the palate, because in those more serious cases, it really is a lot easier on the kid when the work is done earlier before the bones harden. And no, it doesn't guarantee that there will be no problems later on. But it does greatly improve the chances that the kid will have a more normal mouth as he or she gets older.
I forget, where did you get your orthodontic expertise?

orthodontists are paid well for your time.
How dare they use their professional training!
I wish that had been the prevailing treatment method when I was in braces. I went through three years of serious hell. It sucked!

DH and I were just talking about how screwed our baby is going to be in both of those areas.
Sigh.
