Do any of us really want our tombstone to read "She stopped and smelled the roses"?

Not everyone has to work outside the home to ensure that her children are supported. I work outside the home mostly because I enjoy it. My kids are fine. They'd be fine if I didn't work outside the home.

There is no reason one needs to be employed outside the home in order to make a contribution to mankind. Not all work is paid work, and some of the biggest contributions are made by people whose labor is uncompensated, financially. I like to think that my teaching and research makes a difference. I am pretty sure that a lot of the volunteer stuff I do makes a bigger, more immediate difference.

Not all paid employment makes the world better. One could even argue that a lot of the stuff we make and sell, and a lot of the "services" we provide, actually make the world worse.

Sounds good to me.

And so you live your life accordingly and try to accumulate accomplishments. I'm assuming that living life that way makes you happy, which was the very crux of my point. It seems to me that you would be very unhappy as a SAHM because of the things that you find important in life. And a lot of SAHMs would be very unhappy as a WOHM because of the things that they find important in life.

Again, one person's trash is another person's treasure.

Actually, if mine said "beloved wife and mother," I'd be very happy with that. I don't need to tout a list of accomplishments to feel that my life is worthwhile or that what I've done "matters."

Me, too. But only if the second line says, "And they all smelled like sewing machines!" ;)

I don't care if I even have a tomb stone, but I definitely have a need to achieve and child rearing does not do it for me. What I consider achievement, however, does not necessarily have to do with making money, for example.

Many SAHMs get more time to smell the roses than many WOHMs. I understand that you wouldn't trade off less income for more time, but you're kidding yourself if you think that you have a whole lot of time to smell the roses with a special needs kid and three other children, and a longish commute.

Different question for you - don't you sometimes wish you'd picked something a little higher paying so you could vacation this summer, etc.?

I gained 11 hours a week to smell the roses when I stopped WOH.
