Don't you have an annual "curriculum night" or "parents night" where teachers describe the curriculum, homework, grading system, etc., and answer questions?
I'm going to get a little bit silly and blame Hollywood. Because I think that recurring themes in movies really do inform our ideas of what the culture expects. (This only applies to people who watch movies with some regularity). I have noticed that in many, many family comedies, much is made of the parents' ability to get to a child's ball game/recital/performance of some sort. In these movies (there must be hundreds by now) a parent's commitment to and closeness to their child is literally measured by how willing they are to leave a big meeting and get to the field/stage. I have seen this so many times that my brain feels pickled by it. I don't think I'm the only person who has noticed that-at least according to Hollywood- good parents always make it to the game.
