This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

Oh, is THAT what's doing on in front of my house? Here I am thinking these big kids were playing an elaborate form of red-light green-light!

It can happen in any way. Inside or outside, I am well aware of both.

LOL, had it only been that.

I was thinking that. Harvardgrad and some of her predecessors (remember redlightgreenlight????) make me very grateful to live and work among people whose biggest offense is driving 10 miles over the speed limit. I can't imagine what it must be like to have my children attending school with all these children of drug dealers, tax evaders, welfare abusers, and slumlords who either rent illegal apartments or rent apartments to illegals (I never got that one figured out) who whistle, catcall, and harass innocent bystanders. You'd never be able to drop your child off at a birthday party and go grab a cup of coffee without worrying.

Ha!

That's the second time today you made me think of redlightgreenlight.

Well, if I remember right, about half the people in question claimed they never did leave the kid at birthday parties, the parents always had to stay around. Makes sense under those circumstances; I would not leave my kid at a party peopled by these questionable characters, either.

Come to think of it, I seem to remember that this persona is also a huge proponent of parents tagging along to children's birthday parties. It begins to make sense.

I agree. I have lived in many different socio-economic neighborhoods and haven't had troubles like she has posted. I do agree that knowing your neighbors is a good thing. We host a neighborhood block party every May. I get to harvest tomatoes from my backyard neighbors garden. We take in the mail fro a number of neighbors when they are on trips. Things like that. Don't know a thing about the income of our neighbors - I could make educated guesses if pressed (and I haven' yet to be pressed). We even have a few neighbors who are very evasive about what they do for a living - beyond saying they work for the "Defense Department". Actually, I take that back, we have one neighbor for whom I could find out his salary. He is an elected official.

lol!! We STILL go to bday parties for my youngest. Guess that is kind of like getting to know your neighbors, being social, maybe even finding out...gasp...what they do for a living-lol!! :)

Sigh...the problem was solved. BUT..if there was any problem like that again, you can be assured that I or my neighbors would nip it in the bud right away.

I actually live in a VERY desirable town. The average salary is VERY high, compared to the national and ones even around me. Does that mean there is NO trouble at all, of course not. ALL towns have problems. You might not see the problems, the drugs, the illegal activity, but it is there.
