Men can only be happy when they do not assume that the object of life is happiness.
– George Orwell
Well, I might not be willing to pay that much, but if that $900 covers the reasonable market labor costs for the person crafting the shoe that allows him/her to earn a living wage, I'm not sure I see it as a mortal sin to spend that much money on a pair of shoes (provided one can afford it). In any case, I don't see it as necessarily "sad".
I have no idea why people might choose to spend $900 on a pair of shoes. I was merely pointing out that there could be perfectly logical reasons why a pair of shoes might cost that much, and that I wouldn't necessarily consider it "sad" that someone might choose to buy such a pair of shoes.
Of course, if people feel happier and morally superior when buying a pair of shoes for $10, regardless of the conditions of the workers who made the shoes, I'd say go for it!
It has nothing to do with feeling happy or morally superior. I just don't understand what makes a pair of shoes worth that kind of money. I'm sure it's well-made, looks good, comfortable, blah blah blah, but lots of $90 pairs of shoes fit those criteria. What makes it go from $90 to $300 to $600 to $900?
ETA: I know the MARKET reasons for why it might get to those prices. What makes it worth that much to the person BUYING it?

If they are from a good designer and prettily made, you can get away with it without having it look completely crack whore.
That's my problem, I suppose.
