Men can only be happy when they do not assume that the object of life is happiness.

Ok, so if understand you correctly, you don't think it is an inherently "sad" act to buy such shoes, it's just not something you would do. Is that correct?
I'm sure that some people would feel the need to rationalize such a purchase in ways that would make them sad or uncomfortable. I probably also fall into that category. At least, I'm prepared to spend a fair bit on shoes, but I've never yet been able to bring myself to spend anywhere near that much on a pair, and can't imagine that I ever would. However, I'm also sure that there are other people who would simply enjoy the purchase without without having to rationalize, for whatever reason.

I think they're wasting a LOT of money, and I think that's a shame.

LOL, ok, I can tell a pair of fake shoes from a pretty long way off most of the time, ditto for wool vs acrylic and silk vs polyester. But I have also spent a long time dealing with the materials close up, so that may be why. Besides my grandparents were seriously into clothes and shoes, so they would often explain the differences.
For example, I was thinking back to the original peep toes booties someone posted, and remembered them as being plastic. I had only glanced at them and I had not noticed the price, nor read the description. I just checked back, and they were indeed plastic. Something in the way the seams look and the texture.
