You're leaving out the costs of advertising, and the humongous markups that go with branding. These shoes are not being bought directly from the artisan. I am sure that artisans who can make these high quality goods are paid quite well, but I am also pretty sure that if I were able to make contact with the very talented shoemakers here, and buy the shoes directly, he would make a nice profit but I would not be paying anywhere near nine hundred dollars for the shoes.

I am sure some of the cost is related to branding and advertising. However, in the case of shoes, the collaboration between artisan and designer is quite intense, and without either one you would not have the shoes that result.

Where it does not make any sense that a plain white T costs 300 bucks just because it is Chanel, it makes a little more sense that a pair of handcrafted leather shoes from a major designer costs 1000.
