This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

Well, considering my BFF is a grandmother and is only 40, there's nothing wrong with that.

I like the extra height too, but not the pain. Most shoes hurt my feet, and heels hurt them especially. OTOH, I love pretty shoes, so I own heels. I mostly wear them if I have to dominate people for whatever reason. It can be useful in meetings, especially meetings with Greek men.

I did not know that one person did everything from make the last to stitch the shoe, either. I thought perhaps an artisanal workshop type atmosphere was more typical, with a group of maybe five or six guys working on the shoes, and turning out perhaps a couple dozen pairs a week. But I am making that up based on the way I know it was done in the thirteeth century. I am willing to concede that things could have changed between then and now.

Actually going by a documentary I saw recently about a high-end shoe designer and her work with Italian artisans, what you report from the 13th century is probably pretty close to how it is today. However, making the last can take a long time, with a lot of back and forth, and that cost has to be distributed on each individual pair made for that designer on that last. Deciding to make a new last is a huge decision from what I gathered. Samples are also expensive and that cost too has to be spread out.
