This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

I might be wrong, but I was under the impression that the "women" part specifically refers to women who are pregnant or nursing. If a woman is getting WIC benefits, it's because her body is the source of food for the child, not because she's female.

How do you know what the people around her were paying for rent?

I was personally told as they all knew how much everyone was paying.

The waiting list for section 8 housing is years long in my neck of the woods. Most qualify years before they'll ever have access to a unit.

Most that may qualify, never even apply.

(I'm not seeing abuse, in most cases).

I am always fascinated by how much people on this site know about the lives of people they barely know.

Who said I "barely" know them? Some are family, some are friends...

Never mind, I'll just fill in the gaps with my imagination:

She's a single mom, working full time making $75,000 a year, 2 boys (ages 15 and 17 years) who attend public school and work odd jobs under the table on weekends. She has no car loans, no student loans, no health problems, no credit card debt, and yet she is receiving food stamps and pays $30 a month for section 8 housing. Yeah, that would tick me off, too.

grumble, the evening news spoke about the plan allowing borrowers to put only a thousand dollars down to buy a house, identical to what subprime was all about.
