This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

Ya know, in real life, the people I see who act "entitled" are on the other end of the income scale. They think they are entitled to special treatment because of the size of their pay check or bank balance.

There's entitlement everywhere. I don't think that kind of entitlement is as much of a problem though. Take someone who has a big bank balance, and demands special treatment. They'll get it or they'll go elsewhere and get it. Either way they're very likely to get it. If I don't like the treatment I get at a particular doctor, I can take my pick of other doctors. I am not constrained by location or distance, and I have great health insurance so that's not much of a constraint at all. I might have some headaches along the way, I might have to deal with some bureaucracy that pisses me off, but eventually I'll get what I feel I deserve.

If I was on the other end of the spectrum and I didn't like the treatment I got somewhere, I could be limited by any number of things like distance, access to transportation, I might not have access to the best doctors because of the medical insurance I have, I might not be able to go somewhere else and demand the treatment I know I deserve. So entitlement there could very easily leave a person feeling dejected, angry, bitter and hopeless. That's where the problems come from.

And if the woman has many children and far spaced apart, she could be getting benefits for many years.

Years ago we had a friend (EX now) who offered us things she got (grape juice, deluxe kraft cheese, eggs and milk) because she got SO much that it was TOO much for her family of 2 adults, 1 child over 5 and one toddler.

Why? Just speaking from experience.

Plus, IME, people don't even know they are living next to a person who received housing assistance.

And many DO know. They are well aware of what is going on in their neighborhood.

sometimes.

Apparently the hoarders had been there for 10 years before any of us found out --

And yet your "experience" fits exactly into the trite over used complaints I have heard for years from people who care more about the few people bilking the system than the vast majority who benefit and raise up our community.
