This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

I think the same way. I don't know why I would want to know, or need to know, who is receiving WIC and who isn't, or what the sources of my friends' income is. My kids go to a school where it is said that 30% of the students receive some form of tuition assistance but I have no clue in the world who is on aid and who isn't, nor any desire to know. What could it possibly matter?

I don't know anyone who uses WIC, not even any women, infants or children.

I'm thinking it is different in a condo complex than individual homes. Our homes are close together also so I could see people being many acres apart not knowing everyone either in their neighborhood.

Nah, we don't talk in depth about salaries and such but we are close enough that we talk about everyday things and how to better the neighborhood.
I don't find it odd to know WHO you are living next to.

I just wondered if anyone knew a single man who did qualify and/or used WIC as I have never heard of one before.

There you have it. WIC must be fictional.

I am kidding, of course. I know it exists. I keep a color-coded spreadsheet of all the families in my county who receive it. Green for the homes where people deserve it. Yellow for the homes where people are legally eligible, but lazy. Red for the homes where people are lying or cheating in order to make themselves appear eligible. I think it's important to know who my neighbors are. If I drive past one of the green homes, I honk. If I can't nap during the normal work day, they shouldn't either. If I drive past one of the red homes, I take a camera, a magic telescope, and a tape recorder to see if I can get proof of their lying, cheating ways. Those also come in handy if I am not sure if a home should be green, yellow, or red. I can find out more information that way.

I just like to be informed. I think it helps my neighbors to keep the lazy ones from napping and try to catch the lying cheats in a lie.

Sad that you don't find it important to know who your neighbors are.

Talking about everyday things and how to better the neighborhood would not require even a cursory knowledge of someone's income, financial status, expenses or welfare status. That level of knowledge about my financial situation on the part of my neighbors would creep me out.

But if I understand you correctly from this post, you don't know anything about what your neighbors earn or how much they spend or whether or not they qualify for WIC, Food Stamps, Section 8 or whatever. Is that right? After all, you say that "we don't talk in depth about salaries and such ".

Well you gotta admire that kind of diligence and dedication. I'd ask my neighbors for more information so I could color code them but one is a farmer, he's kind of busy making food for people who may or may not be able to afford it. The other is a crazy lady who's out of my line of sight, though I do know that she doesn't always wear pants when she takes the dog out in the morning. I don't know if she's on WIC, but I'm sure her son is not. He's over age 5, he might actually be over age 45, and he does not appear to be pregnant or lactating at the moment.
