None of my neighbors have felt the urge to gossip and generally over-share personal information at the first (or even the second or third) meeting. Several have happily come over to offer help and useful information about the neighborhood.
I don't consider knowing everyone's profession, financial status or welfare status to be useful information. I am happy to know about things like neighborhood associations, local parks and playgrounds and the best place to hunt wild berries and mushrooms. That's far more useful information without being remotely gossipy.
So you never ask and you never search, people just volunteer that information? WOW! I have to admit I've never in my life met anyone who simply blurted out their income and financial status to all and sundry! You must know some very interesting people :-).
What are you defining as "gossip" and not "useful information"?
I don't think knowing that my neighbor is a cop or a lawyer or a teacher "gossipy".
Of course many people may be unaware. However, since I never indicated that I thought salaries were never published, I am not among the unaware.
I said I have never ASKED. Public alaries are published in our local paper so it is hard to avoid and many ARE online so it is public info.
I like to see where I stand in my "career" also.
