This theme was touched upon in another thread and I wanted to discuss it further.

I think it's crass to discuss salaries with my neighbors or my friends. Obviously, ymmv.

Not necessarily the occupation, but I do consider someone's salary to be their private business,

<<Are you friends with your neighbors? >>

I'm friend with some of my neighbors, not nearly all.

It's not mine to determine.

You don't CHOOSE to look at the paper?

Unfortunately when you work for a public company and they publish salaries you have to have the understanding that people WILL see how much you make. I do not speak salaries with people on an open basis but I see nothing wrong looking at ones that are published for the public to see.

It varies. For the most part, my knowledge about them was acquired independently of them living in my neighborhood. I've connected with these people through work, volunteer efforts, mutual friends, etc ... not because they are my neighbors.

Thanks for your answers :)

What do you mean by public company?

Is this not a question that is brought up when you meet new people?
