Isn't that the same as what you are doing?

You are deciding YOUR terms.

That's really sweet. In that situation, I'd probably give a little something, too. I tend to give the first time I see a person, but I try to avoid being a long-term contributer of cash if they seem to be a permanent fixture. If you're going to be on the corner anyway, why not sell newspapers, KWIM?

I almost feel that it is funny that I got into this debate.

Seeing people begging for food/money is something I rarely see so it is not like I am walking right by these people and snubbing them. That is something that is seen in the large city my city is a suburb of. Since I do not spend a lot of time in that city it has been years since I personally saw anyone begging, So it has really been a non issue as far as using it for a teaching tool for my kids.

I know that people are hurting in my town but it is more hidden. It is hidden so well that I am sure that many people do not realize how many people are hurting. That is why I choose to give my money to an organization that helps people in need by providing food, help for rent, utiliy expences etc.

FTR, I wasn't saying there is anything wrong with the way you do it.

I agree, but it's not always clear who needs the extra dollar.
