The example that I have shown my kids is that begging is not something to be rewarded. There are many other ways to help someone than to give them a dollar, like helping to fund the places where they can get the help they need.

I personally would rather give them the dollar so I KNOW they will use it instead of helping to "fund the places where they can get the help they need" (a tax

Sometimes people like to do things not just for the tax write-off. It makes them feel good to see the reaction on the actual person's face when you help THEM out, not the charity you are writing your check to.

If you are insinuating that I take a donate to charity just for the tax write-off you are way off base.

If it were about the money then I would not donate at all, keeping my money would save me a lot more than any tax write off.

If you do not mind what the dollar is used for, then it is fine to hand a beggar a dollar. Our family works in a shelter where we provide meals and housing for indigents; of course not all care to use them because you cannot stay if you are drunk, high or belligerent, and there is no smoking indoors. Still, we are able to provide housing for 30 to 35 men and women a month and meals for about seventy people a night. Most of the people who are out begging in our town are our clients and they will use the money for alcohol and cigarettes. But that is your call, if you wish to support that lifestyle. If I were all alone in the world with nobody who really cared about me, I might smoke and drink, too.

So you would rather give to someone who may use the money for drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol?

I would rather donate my money and time (with my children) to the shelter that actually provides food, shelter, and clothing to anyone who disparately needs help, whether they be the addicted, the mentally ill or those just down on their luck. When I lived in the bay area, I often offered to buy food for the panhandlers at the nearest diner, and 9 out or 10 times they turned me down. I've lived much too closely to addiction to give anyone money without preconditions, BTDT and I'm done as an enabler whether they be relatives, friends, or strangers.

I did not insinuate anything but you can't "write-off" giving someone

No, I do not know exactly what that person is using the dollar for, in which if you (in general) are more concerned that your money is being wisely used, you can buy them some food, a drink, a shirt, umbrella, whatever they might need.

Yes, you can if you itemize. You don't need receipts for a certain limit on cash gifts.
