"i think it's a shame some ppl become bitter later on because they felt "deprived" of childhoods...as an adult now, there's more i am grateful for and deeply respect and understand about my parents than i did as a kid."

I TOTALLY agree with you.

LOL, I dunno. My own dad is a bit like MIL's dad actually, horribly stingy and quite eccentric. Our mom's parents, OTOH, were sensible, but lived a very nice life and were not afraid to spend money either on themselves or on others. We have all come out much closer to those grandparents than to our dad. We can't stand when my dad is being cheap, but we are not materialistic either. We lucked out I guess.

My sister is like that. She blames my mother too. Funny thing is, my brother and I both turned out just as cheap as mom is. We're not sure why sis came out the opposite.

Yes, that happens too. It is a hard balance to hit. I think it also has quite a bit to do with the environment the kid is in, especially in the teen years. Teens want to feel part of the group and fit in. It is OK not to have silk panties, but if all the other girls have silk panties then it can be a problem. My MIL was from an affluent family and in an affluent private school, yet made to dress in a very different manner.

To be plain poor has it own special pain I am sure. It is understandable that it could give some repercussions later.

I have some cousins who I think were effected the same way by their money issues of their youth. In their case it was not because of having very fugal parents but of having poor parents. There are 4 DDs and 1 DS in the family and at least 3 of the DDs are extremely materialistic, especially when it came to buying things for their children. I think that they tried to make up for not having much when they were kids by giving their kids everything.
