Do you think a SAHM should go back to work once the kids start school?

  • Absolutely, why shouldn't she? There's no reason why she shouldn't.
  • It's up to her & her family.
  • No, not really. What do the kids being in school have to do w/ her working?

As far as the "not too many sign ups" I'll have to disagree for here. I know women who get up to make the call to the "y" when they turn their phones on at 5am in order to get a spot in the swim lessons (3-6p wk days). I know their are kids turned away from soccer, bball, tball teams because the roster is full (practices are all 3-6p wkdays).

Apparently this is what the majority want here since it is offered & successful. I don't doubt (and wasn't implying either) that it is different in every different place. I have heard parents say that the soccer teams thru one organization does have later practices (after 5 or 6) but they always have openings as they are not popular like the earlier ones. Most of the people I know with these experiences since I don't yet are WOHMs. They haven't complained one second about it, so guess they are happy.

That is true with a late dismissal like that. Ours is out much earlier than that. It isn't that I don't think there are activities after 6 but the majority of the ones that I actually know people (friends, family, neighbors) participating in thru school, parks & rec, the "y" are during the 3-6 time frame. Most anyone that has activities are finisihed & home by 6:30. Maybe that is the general preference. Definately would be ours.

I wasn't talking about lessons as in dance, gymnastics, etc. Yes, you pay for those, they offer a variety of scheduling ideas including Saturdays.

Dh & I have about 1 1/2 to 2 hours every night. A few nights maybe only an hour. That is our time. We usually talk the whole time but we do like to watch some tv or cuddle to read together. Shh! That is mommy & daddy's quiet time and we love it.

Well, I know they don't have schoolbuses everywhere, but that is beside the point. I think the OP wasn't referring to the fact that you had schoolbuses as abnormal, it's more likely she (whoever it was, I can't remember) was talking about the buses taking each child to their driveway. *That* is abnormal.

I'm sorry, if I were married to someone who had *decided* NOT to save for retirement, and arbitrarily decided he didn't feel like working anymore and that I had to work to support him from now on, dipping into retirement that I had planned for years and years, and that was meant to support us in years in the future, not today, I probably would tell him to take a hike too. If someone doesn't plan for their future, they don't get to quit working just because.

No, I'm pretty sure MOST towns have activities for kids starting at or after 5:30. But you're right, it could be just my town (but i doubt it).

None of my business at all. A sahm can lie on the couch and eat Haagen Daz all day while watching Jerry Springer if she wants. Just don't let her ask for a pat on the back or tell me that she's working as hard as a wohm, because I'm not buying it.

Well, I do come here, that's my guilty pleasure but no, I have a problem with sitting down and just doing nothing (or nothing important). I feel guilty. When I sahm when the kids were little I wouldn't even read a magazine.

My husband is the same way. He doesn't really relax either.

I know, it's my problem, but I was brought up to believe that being idle or wasting time was verboten!
