Do you think a SAHM should go back to work once the kids start school?

  • Absolutely, why shouldn't she? There's no reason why she shouldn't.
  • It's up to her & her family.
  • No, not really. What do the kids being in school have to do w/ her working?

I don't think it is ever silly if that is what the parent feels is best and/or the child wants. I hated, hated, hated riding the school bus. I got so ill that I literally turned green. Riding it in the morning meant I spent the whole first part of my school day too sick to lift my head, running back & forth & often just staying in the bathroom (getting a good education there five days a week huh?). Same thing for riding it home. It was a 15min drive tops from my house to my school for mom or dad to drive me. It took over an hour to get there in the morning by bus. Over an hour to get back home in the afternoon by bus. Plus all the sickness. I would get sick every time I stepped foot on the bus, ugh, makes me nauseated to even think about riding it. Ugh! My kids get so car sick just going for short distances, they are like me :(

Of course they won't. But we will always be their parents & we know what is important to us in raising our kids. I don't expect them to keep their 8:30 bedtime (where did you get that absurd idea?) Family time is important. If there are any exceptions one night a week will be it. That is our stand on the issue. I have issues with all these "activities" taking place all hours and taking up valuable family time nights & wknds.

As I said, the leagues we will start with, do have 12 and 13 year olds I know for sure. Maybe 14, not sure on that one. They are the 3-6pm practices, with games before noon on Sat. Acceptable.

We will do these for as long as we possibly can.

Not stuck in a mindset as you put it. But we do know how we want to raise our kids specifically. We will vary on a few things, sure, all parents do. But not on the issue of being out of the house several nights a wk and having wknds booked. We won't allow it to happen as it interferes w/family time. One activity per child at a time.

We are in the "city" school district, not the county. We have no bus service. But why would they use public transportation? I don't think that would be an option the parent's would even think about. I know I wouldn't.

We would not be willing to do picnics 4-5 nights per week just so our kids could eat at a decent hour.

I've already explained it a hundred times. I was refuting twinsmoms opinion that CLW's husband should be allowed to retire arbitrarily by saying that I have more information about CLW's situation because I've posted here longer. I not once said OR implied that the length of time I've posted here has anything to do with how right I am.

I don't *expect* to be patted on the back, but it sure is nice once in a while--for SAH *and* for working.

I'm not saying that SAHMs deserve anything. I also don't think WOHMs deserve any special accolades. You're not doing anything exept what you're obligated to do since having kids--providing for them.

I don't need a job to "up" my image of self-worth. Pats on the back from co-workers don't compare to those I get from my family.

Also. Our jr high & high school teams practice immediately followig school. All kids are home by 5. This is the school teams. The game nights, all are home by 8:30 to 9. Just like when we were in school.

The fact that a lot of the US doesn't have great public transportation has more to do with how far apart things are more than people being in love with their cars. Europe is much more compacted. Public trans. makes more sense there. In places like where I live, public transportation would not only be a waste of money for the city, there wouldn't be enough people to take part in it.
