Do you think a SAHM should go back to work once the kids start school?

  • Absolutely, why shouldn't she? There's no reason why she shouldn't.
  • It's up to her & her family.
  • No, not really. What do the kids being in school have to do w/ her working?

So what are the benefits of SAH? We know what the benefits of higher SES are. I'd like to hear them. Are kids more likely to go to college like they are with higher SES? Do they do better in school? Are they more moral? What are the benefits of SAH, in general (since we're not talking about personal limitations here)?

It's a class, but if you want to be in the marching band, it's afterschool practice also. I guess every place is different. I know our band is very competitive, so it's a huge time committment on the part of the kids and parents. Last year they traveled cross country to march in one of the New Years bowl game parades.

I'll try and spell this out for you. SAH is not universally better for children, just as WOH isn't. Higher SES has been shown to improve childrens lives, just as more time does. Children with highly involved parents are less likely to do drugs, do better in school, and are happier. This is not to say WOH families are not involved. What I'm saying is, while your WOH improves your SES and does not diminish your capacity to be involved, my WOH would NOT improve my SES and WOULD diminish my capacity to be involved. Both things are important. If my situation changed, perhaps what is better for my kids would change, as they get older, and as our position in life changes. Do you really think that SAH is never better for any kids? All I'm saying is you can't say one is better or worse in general, but individually things can damn well be better or worse.

Unfortunately many CA schools do not view music as important. In my high school, they wanted to cut the music and drama programs completely so they could build a new football stadium. Sick I tell you, sick. (BTW, the football stadium that was there was perfectly good) Oh, I'm not arguing with you or anything, I'm just lamenting the loss of music programs in schools.

Hoorah!

"SAH is not universally better for children, just as WOH isn't."

Right!

"Higher SES has been shown to improve childrens lives, just as more time does. Both things are important."

Right On!

Our SES wouldn't be different because we don't sacrifice, we have and do whatever we want, my SAH doesn't prohibit that. The kids would be in their house all day whether I stay home or went to work. That wouldn't change.

"Do you really think that SAH is never better for any kids? All I'm saying is you can't say one is better or worse in general, but individually things can damn well be better or worse."

ITA and yes I do think SAH can be better for some families.

OK..........

I called my friend who has children that attends the H.S. because I was curious. The practices for football, baseball, basketball are all held immediately following the last class of the day, kids are home by 5:00.

Games. Football she said starts at 6:30-7. Same with basketball. Baseball games are typically held immediately following school, with a 3:30 to 4 start. Rarely are they held later.

See, because we have a SAHP, it isn't too much. We are able to schedule music and art lessons immediately following school. And we do only allow one sport at a time, but per child. If the kids are on separate teams or in different sports, that could extend the number of nights that we are out per night, which is what I meant by having more than one child adds to our number of evenings with plans.

DD is not playing baseball this season, as she is now too old for the YMCA, and I have yet to find a decent league that doesn't stress "WIN, WIN, WIN!!!". So, just DS is playing soccer. So, we are only out of the house one evening a week for soccer practice (which I asst. coach), and for one game on Saturday. And it is only for 8 weeks, then DS will take a break and DD will be playing basketball for the YMCA (DS isn't old enough yet). Because we have a SAHP, we can schedule the kids music lessons in the afternoons, so the only other evening plans we have are church activities. Best of both worlds, with a pretty free weekend. :)
