Do you think a SAHM should go back to work once the kids start school?

  • Absolutely, why shouldn't she? There's no reason why she shouldn't.
  • It's up to her & her family.
  • No, not really. What do the kids being in school have to do w/ her working?

Sure it was. Before cars, communities sprung up around farms, train lines, or waterways. People lived closer to cities because they had to work there. Because of the automobile, people were able to build farther and farther out. No one was motivated to put in good public transportation systems because, well, there were cars and they are far more convenient anyway. If cars hadn't been around, towns would have had to be built with access to areas of employment. That would have been trains, boats, or buses. Public transportation is far easier to implement beforehand than afterward.

Our church praise band (who play every Sunday), practice 2 evenings a week, plus they attend the youth group on Sunday afternoons and play with the youth band. When I was in HS, I had a good friend who played in a youth orchestra. They practiced every Saturday and one night a week. They toured europe when she was in 10th grade.

If I gave my children teh gift of music, part of the gift is letting them share it with everyone by performing. Performances take practice, period. I think it's too bad you woudl never allow such a thing. I did it when I was in HS and you could not ask for a more well rounded positive activity. That's why I don't mind that she is gone 3 nights a week now. She will treasure this time and have fond memories for the rest of her life.

If a HS football game starts at 6:30-7, it is guaranteed not to let out until 9:30-10. Unless of course, the kids play football faster where you live.

I didn't say I wouldn't allow it at all. I said I wouldn't allow a program such as the one your DD is in. I could always find other programs, there are a wealth of them out there. It isn't always one size fits all.

I have some answers for you that either you have ignored or did not see. Children of *educated* sah or part-time working parents are at an advantage. The boys grow up to make about $9,000 more per year with one more year of education. The daughters are 166% less likely to see her marriage end in divorce, controlling for parents' marital satisfaction and daughters' education and occupational attainment. If parents were less educated (12th grade or less), it made no difference if the both parents woh fulltime. For the 3rd for 4th time, this came from a longitudinal study starting in the early 80's and ending in the mid 90's from a book called "A Generation at Risk". Maybe you will respond to it this time.

That really sucks. I know that art and music are always the first to go when budget cuts come. Even though our school district funds music where we live, it's really the parents who pay out of ouwn pockets to make the program successful. Just in the last month, I have written at least $300 in checks to the music program and that's just the beginning.

I know you didn't say so in this post, but I can't find the one where you did.

Why won't you travel without your husband?

I would care if that was what I was trying to disprove. I was disproving that SAH can not be shown to be better for children.

What you see as a flaw I see as a good quality. The entire western half of the US is only developed because "we love our space". The nature of the original settlers is they are explorers and adventurers. The only way to get a whole bunch of people who would rather live close to eachother is to move back to Europe, or not be America.

When did I talk about the inconvenience to me?
