Does America want Moms to stay at home?

It was actually dh that suggested that America (gov't I suppose) wants Moms to stay at home. From what I have learned from these boards daycare is hideously expensive and maternity leave is very short. Many have said they couldn't afford to work because of daycare costs. Compare this to Canada where we have $7 a day daycare and Quebec is increasing maternity leave to 2 years at 55% pay or 1 year at 75% pay in January. With the $7 a day daycare Moms can easily afford to work, and with the paid maternity leave Moms can easily afford to stay home. It seems that in the states you're 'forced' into situations because it's your only option. Can't afford daycare? Stay at home. Maternity leave too short or have to work to support the family? Go back to work. Would any of you prefer if it would be easier financially to make either decision like it seems to be in Canada or are you fine with how it is?

Where are these communities? I've worked with the poorest of poor throughout Michigan and I did not go to one school where college information was not available. Where college was not talked about.

Now, if there are whole communities that skip K-12 education entirely here in the US, I don't know where they are.

I think trying to engage on this point is futile; just accept that you and yours are EVILLLLLLLL for not earning more money, but still owning a home and having kids.

Well, mine for one. The information is *available* as in it's sitting on a table somewhere where anyone who is looking for it can find it, but it's not offered. CA school districts often don't have the money for a counselor.

What about children who will go without vaccinations?
What about the women who are going to be flood the county hospitals needing dialysis, needing heart surgery, needing chemotherapy costing mega bucks because they didn't have preventive services or early treatments because they live in the world of "you get no insurance if you don't have a job that give you one?" Or do you suggest that we close our county hospitals too because everyone is responsible for their own care?

For those who want to help themselves, there is so much available, I can't even begin to list it all.

Educational grants, scholarships, student loans, etc. Medical care, free health care and seminars, free birth control, free dental screenings, free bone density screens, free wellness-checks. Minority mortgage loans, Section 8 housing, welfare checks, food stamps, school uniforms, Head Start...

On and on and on and on I go. You know how many health fairs I worked and barely a soul

You must not be getting what I'm saying. All the programs in the world don't do anything if noone knows about them. I think there should be community outreach counselors or something like that to educate people on what is available to get them ahead. Applying for a lot of that stuff is difficult, especially if you have little education to start with.

Maybe your doctor is putting down another diagnosis that *is* covered by your insurance --like some dermatologists will bill the insurance company saying that a mole that was actually removed for cosmetic purposes was removed for medical purposes?

What a crock. Your DH can save any percentage he WANTS; what you're complaining about is that you want to have MORE tax protected savings than those earning less. the reason your dh can't sock away 12% off his income in his 401(k) isn't because he isn't permitted to save at all--he could put any of the extra into any number of savings accounts, investments or other means of saving money. The issue on the 401(k) is the liimted permitted to be sheltered from taxes, which is EQUAL for everyone. My limit is your limit and if my percentage is higher, it only means your dh earns more than I do and that you guys have MUCH more disposable income than I do.

So if you want your dh to save more than 8%, have at. No one's stopping you.
