Does America want Moms to stay at home?

It was actually dh that suggested that America (gov't I suppose) wants Moms to stay at home. From what I have learned from these boards daycare is hideously expensive and maternity leave is very short. Many have said they couldn't afford to work because of daycare costs. Compare this to Canada where we have $7 a day daycare and Quebec is increasing maternity leave to 2 years at 55% pay or 1 year at 75% pay in January. With the $7 a day daycare Moms can easily afford to work, and with the paid maternity leave Moms can easily afford to stay home. It seems that in the states you're 'forced' into situations because it's your only option. Can't afford daycare? Stay at home. Maternity leave too short or have to work to support the family? Go back to work. Would any of you prefer if it would be easier financially to make either decision like it seems to be in Canada or are you fine with how it is?

I doubt that, only b/c his office is called the Infertility Institute. He's an RE, the only things he does are strictly for infertility.

Exactly. The middle class also gets screwed by the health care system. They, too, have to choose between mortgage payments, day care, transportation and health coverage. And they're not even poor. Some of the plans have deductibles and copays where a serious disease would set you back thousands, while the plan picks up a hundred thousand. A square deal, I guess, if you can afford a few thousand. On top of the premiums, deductibles and copays.

very well said post mondo. i agree.

>>my brother is a VP now. He earned <<
dh is now too. i don't mean to brag but i think dh (and maybe your brother?) have earned their vp status in a lot more ways than some i know. my brother, 4 years younger than me has been a bank vp for about 10 years now. his education is no more than dh nor is his experience broadened outside this one bank he has worked for since graduating college. vp titles are vanity in some places, especially banks imo....i remember when i left the bank after dd2 was born, our branch manager was just promoted to avp. all branch managers had earned that title, regardless of their amount of years of service or experience.

i don't know..vps, evps, even director titles are more showy than deserving fme. dh has always been very modest about his roles in every company he has ever worked for. his recorded phone message still plays "you've reached the desk of xxx.." not "you've reached such and such vp at such and such company"..bleh. lol.

If I'm not incorrect, it's your DH making the high dollar salary, right?

We do agree on this point. I do think there is a huge gap between the poor (who are fully capable of finding service) and the middle-class-under-insured.

I would totally support my tax dollars going to help a hard-working tax-paying family who was beset with a catastrophic illness. Mainly because many of these people

Unless you are upset (like PNJ) that you are paying their share of taxes. :)

My parents were savers too. Social security is still a big part of my mom's income. It's very important to a lot of seniors.

Oh, I'm sorry.

No, I don't think that high dollar earners are the only ones busting their humps. As a matter of fact, I think that the higher the $$ the less a lot of people end up working after a while ;)

I just think that intellectual prowess or athletic prowess or whatever is justly compensated and manual labor not as much.

Growing up, we had access to a ton of information. But, it sat there, in the library or the counselor's office. I don't think I ever went in to see him (her?) I can't remember.

Same as all the schools I worked in. Info everywhere, career day, etc.

Oh, I think we pay an unfair amount of taxes, but mainly because I don't really care for where a lot of it goes.

I want a flat tax, remember?
