Does America want Moms to stay at home?

It was actually dh that suggested that America (gov't I suppose) wants Moms to stay at home. From what I have learned from these boards daycare is hideously expensive and maternity leave is very short. Many have said they couldn't afford to work because of daycare costs. Compare this to Canada where we have $7 a day daycare and Quebec is increasing maternity leave to 2 years at 55% pay or 1 year at 75% pay in January. With the $7 a day daycare Moms can easily afford to work, and with the paid maternity leave Moms can easily afford to stay home. It seems that in the states you're 'forced' into situations because it's your only option. Can't afford daycare? Stay at home. Maternity leave too short or have to work to support the family? Go back to work. Would any of you prefer if it would be easier financially to make either decision like it seems to be in Canada or are you fine with how it is?

The banking industry does indeed have a hand in creating the bankruptcy. I described a couple of instances in other posts here. In essence, the credit card companies aggressively market debt and year by year perfect their ways of maximizing the profit. When President Clinton was on his way out, MBNA was the single largest contributor to Bush's campaign.

i'm just curious, would you debate someone if they said they said they didn't understand why the sky appeared to be orange when they thought it was blue?? i guess some people truly like to debate, no matter from what angle??

And so do the consumers have a hand.

But what about the local bank that gives Mr. And Mrs. Smith a mid-interest reasonable loan. Smiths declare bankruptcy. Bank loses a lot of money. They're paying consequences for actions that shouldn't have consquences.

I agree that some companies prey on the weak. But many don't. And many bankrupt people were victims. And many weren't.

If the sky is orange? No, I wouldn't debate them. But if its blue, then yeah, I would.

Who said bankruptcy itself is essentially corrupt? It has its place, and lenders in good faith should recover. Mortgages, however, are secured by real estate. Btw, are you new, or do I know you under an old name? I cannot figure it out...

It's SavCal. I couldn't stay away. *hanging my head in shame*

Mortgages are secured by real estate, but the lender often doesn't get the value of the loan back. They often lose money on bankruptcy deals.

Thanks for the link! Brilliant speech, I'm going to have to keep a closer eye on this guy. You are right about everyone using the system. Even the very rich in Switzerland make use of the regular universal health care and the public bus/tram system.

I'm one of the few who think teachers are fairly compensated. All the vacations, summers off. Quit yer whining.

We have friends who are police officers and they should make more. With the horror stories she tells me, anyway.

BUT, we all choose to become what we become, don't we? If you want to make a boatload of money, get into a career that makes a boatload of money. Don't choose to do what you love and then whine because it doesn't pay. Um, do a little research?

Oh, I know that was the case *then* but it wasn't meant to be "This is how every future generation will fund their retirement."

I know about the Depression, silly. ;)

Y'know, I was thinking about that the other day, thinking "Hollie is definitely an Okie gal, but would she...?" LOL!

Around here, real estate has been rising for so long it's unheard of for banks to lose on foreclosures. What we call a "flat" real estate market is only single digit appreciation.
